While climate targets are being downplayed at the European level and the UN Climate Change Conference is struggling to find a global solution, Sonnentor is sticking to its zero-emissions mission. Over the past three years, the organic pioneer has already reduced its emissions by almost 25 percent. The company aims to be free of fossil fuel emissions by April 2028 at its main site in Sprögnitz. Its sister companies in the Czech Republic and Romania plan to achieve this goal by 2030.

Sonnentor is focusing on e-mobility. Their fleet also includes an electric truck for regional collection and delivery of their herbal treasures.

„A look at Sonnentor’s current greenhouse gas balance reveals only two key levers where we can still make a difference: energy sources and mobility. This is precisely where we are implementing concrete measures,“ explains CSR team leader and values custodian Florian Krautzer.

Full energy ahead – from sun, wood and herbs

Renewable energy isn't just a buzzword at Sonnentor; it's a way of life. Instead of oil or gas, wood chips made from regional waste wood are used for heating – supplemented by herb residues from production. Thanks to photovoltaic systems on the roof, almost half of the electricity for production is already generated by solar power. The other half comes from certified green electricity. Smart energy monitoring further helps save electricity by visualizing peak loads and enabling even smarter control of processes – such as charging electric vehicles – in the future. In quality assurance, an innovative CO₂ compressor system ensures that the 100% biogenic CO₂ used can be reused multiple times – a true example of a closed-loop system.

Mobility with responsibility

Whether using the electric company car to visit the fields of the cultivation partners or the electric truck for regional delivery of the herbal treasures: Sonnentor is consistently electrifying its fleet – and of course prefers to charge the vehicles with self-generated solar power.

Over 40 electric vehicle charging points are available at the Sprögnitz site for employees and visitors – most of them free of charge. And where e-mobility isn't yet an option, the company is temporarily using HVO, a fossil-free fuel made from food and agricultural waste. The impressive result: 36 percent fewer emissions from the vehicle fleet in the last fiscal year alone. This brings SONNENTOR a big step closer to its goal of zero emissions!

Conclusion: Change begins with the first step – and must continue consistently.

Instead of waiting for political compromises, Sonnentor takes action with conviction and results. Because one thing is clear: climate change cannot be stopped with half-hearted goals – but only with decisive measures.

And what if nothing had happened?

Sonnentor asked themselves this very question – and did the math. The company's value guardians wanted to know: "Has our commitment to combating climate change actually made a difference?" The answer is a resounding "YES," and value guardian Florian Krautzer cites a striking figure to illustrate this: "If we hadn't been relying on heat from biomass and geothermal energy, green electricity, photovoltaic systems, e-mobility, biogenic CO2 in quality assurance, and closed-loop systems for years, emissions at our Sprögnitz site would be almost nine times higher today! This demonstrates that it truly makes a difference whether you actively shape change – or simply watch it unfold."„
